Design to Communicate

We create custom scientific illustrations to communicate your message. We understand the complexities of scientific research, and we translate them into visuals that not only communicate ideas but also captivate and engage viewers.

By combining scientific research experience with design practice we can create visuals that lead to a more immersive understanding of complex technical subjects.

How a Commission Works

The Brief

The first step is to understand your product or service.  This involves you providing any information  you think would be required to build the image.

This may be

  • background information
  • written description of the image
  • your sketches
  • examples of how you would like the artwork to look

The brief can be completed by email or by video call

Contract

Based on the information you have provided about the image and its use a contact will be prepared to capture key information such as

  • Image deliverables
  • Delivery date
  • Copyright
  • Price
  • Responsibilities

If you agree with terms the project will start.

Drafts

Draft 1

I will work to produce a first draft which will be used to agree what information is included, how elements are positioned, relative scales ect. At the end of this draft all the major compositional decisions will have been made.

Draft 2

After you have reviewed and provided feedback a second draft will be prepared.  This draft will now focus on refining the image adding all text and addressing details such as alignment, textures, colours ect.

After addressing your feedback on the last draft should see the image moving to finalisation.  Minor changes can be made to the final image if necessary.

The Final invoice for payment will be issued for payment prior to delivery of final files.

For academic groups source files may be included in the final delivered files The provided layers allow repurposing.

How are images priced?

Each project is unique and brings with it its own development requirements.

Parameters contributing to price are image complexity, copyright requirements, the amount of design development required and the delivery date.

With so many considerations each project is priced individually.

Frequently Asked Questions

I create images for lots of different purposes on scientific and engineering topics. For print, digital media, presentations and exhibitions.

Get in contact and we can discuss what you would like to commission.  You provide all the information you want included in the image and what you want it to look like.  I will then create a series of drafts to refine the content and look (usually 2 drafts). When all your feedback is incorporated the final image files will be delivered.

The type of information and references clients need to provide depends of the project but typically information such as a description of what needs to be included in the image,  photographs of equipment, rough sketches and examples of images that have the look/design  you would like in your illustration.

Yes I try and accommodate short deadlines but it is advisable to get in contact as early as possible to make sure I have availability and to avoid additional rush fees.

I can provide files in all the major formats but typically images are in PNG.  If you are an academic I will provide files preserving layers in PDF and SVG with text and line work still editable . This allows the images to be reformatted and repurposed.

Yes I retain copyright unless it is requested. Typically you receive a non-exclusive license that cannot be sold but if you require other rights then they can be bought and included in the contract. Rights costs will depend on purpose and duration so if you have a particular request please get in contact

Yes I can provide one to one coaching or for groups.  Topics covered include work flow, design considerations and basic file structures.

Payment options available are

  • Direct bank transfer (EUR only)
  • Money Transfer Service (Range of currencies)
  • Credit Card (Range of currencies)

Full payment must be received prior to transfer of final files.

I dont use AI in my workflow.

If a client provides and AI image as a reference image as part of the brief that is OK.  I will use that image in the same way as any other reference image to help guide and refine the design process.

If a client provides and AI image and requests a recreation of that image or just make minor changes then no.  I don’t provide that service.
